Consecration of the priests
8
And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 ๐โTake Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, and the anointing oil, and an ox for the sin offering, and two rams, and a basket of bread made without yeast, 3 ๐and gather all the congregation together at the door of the tabernacle of the congregationโ. 4 ๐And Moses did as the LORD commanded him; and the assembly was gathered together to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.5 ๐And Moses said to the congregation, โThis is the thing which the LORD commanded to be doneโ. 6 ๐And Moses brought Aaron and his sons, and washed them with water.
8:6 Note at Ex 29:4.๐ชถ
7 ๐And he put on him the tunic, and tied the sash around him, and clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him, and tied on him the skillfully woven waistband of the ephod, and fastened the ephod to him with it. 8 ๐And he put the breastplate on him, and he put the Urim and Thummim in the breastplate. 9 ๐And he put the turban on his head, and on the front of the turban, he put the golden plate, the holy crown, just as the LORD commanded Moses.
10 ๐And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them. 11 ๐And he sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all its utensils, and both the laver and its base, to consecrate them. 12 ๐And he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaronโs head, and anointed him to consecrate him.
8:12Ex 29:7. This oil signifies Godโs Holy Spirit. Observe that the anointing oil was poured on Aaron the high priest before the sacrifices were slain, but that the ordinary priests received their anointing after the blood of the sacrifice was put on them (vs 24,30). Also the oil was poured on Aaron, but only sprinkled on the ordinary priest. Aaron as high priest signifies the Lord Jesus as High Priest. The Lord Jesus needed no sacrifice for Himself and He was anointed with the Holy Spirit before He gave himself as a sacrifice for others (Luke 3:21-22; 4:18). Also He had the Holy Spirit without measure โ signified by pouring the oil on Aaron (John 3:34). The ordinary priests signify believers of this New Testament age who need to be cleansed through the blood of Christ before they are anointed by the Holy Spirit.๐ชถ
13 ๐And Moses brought Aaronโs sons and put tunics on them, and tied sashes around them, and put caps on them, just as the LORD commanded Moses.
14 ๐And he brought the ox for the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ox for the sin offering. 15 ๐And he killed it. And Moses took the blood and with his finger put it all around on the horns of the altar, and purified the altar, and poured the blood at the bottom of the altar, and consecrated it, to make atonement for it. 16 ๐And he took all the fat that was on the inner parts, and the lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and Moses burned it on the altar. 17 ๐But the ox and its hide, its flesh, and its dung, he burned with fire outside the camp, just as the LORD commanded Moses.
18 ๐And he brought the ram for the burnt offering; and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 19 And he killed it. And Moses sprinkled the blood on the altar all around. 20 ๐And he cut the ram into pieces. And Moses burned the head and the pieces and the fat. 21 ๐And he washed the inner parts and the legs in water. And Moses burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt sacrifice for a soothing aroma, and an offering made by fire to the LORD, just as the LORD commanded Moses.
22 ๐And he brought the other ram, the ram of consecration; and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 23 ๐And he killed it. And Moses took some of its blood, and put it on the tip of Aaronโs right ear, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the large toe of his right foot. 24 ๐And he brought Aaronโs sons, and Moses put some of the blood on the tip of their right ears, and on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the large toes of their right feet. And Moses sprinkled the blood all around on the altar. 25 ๐And he took the fat, and the fat tail, and all the fat that was on the inner parts, and the lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and the right shoulder, 26 ๐and from the basket of bread made without yeast that was before the LORD, he took one cake made without yeast, and a cake of bread with oil, and one wafer, and put them on the fat, and on the right shoulder, 27 ๐and he put all of this in Aaronโs hands, and in his sonsโ hands, and waved them as a wave offering before the LORD. 28 ๐Then Moses took them from their hands, and burned them on the altar on the burnt offering. They were ordination offerings, a soothing aroma. It was an offering made with fire to the LORD. 29 ๐And Moses took the breast and waved it as a wave offering before the LORD; for this was Mosesโ portion from the ordination ram, just as the LORD commanded Moses.
30 ๐And Moses took some of the anointing oil and of the blood which was on the altar, and sprinkled it on Aaron, and on his garments, and on his sons with him, and on his sonsโ garments, and sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons with him, and his sonsโ garments.
31 ๐And Moses said to Aaron and to his sons, โBoil the meat at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket of ordination offerings, as I commanded, saying, Aaron and his sons shall eat it. 32 ๐And you shall burn with fire what is left of the meat and of the bread. 33 ๐And you shall not go out of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation for seven days, until the days of your ordination are at an end; for he will take seven days to ordain you. 34 ๐What he has done today is just as the LORD commanded to be done to make atonement for you.
8:13-34 All this is in accordance with the instructions God gave Moses in Ex 29:8-35.๐ชถ
35 ๐Therefore you shall stay at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation day and night for seven days, and keep the charge of the LORD, so that you do not die; for so I am commandedโ.
8:35 Seven signifies a complete period of time.๐ชถ
36 ๐So Aaron and his sons did everything which the LORD commanded through Moses.
